Since 2020, I have been committed to building a capsule wardrobe for each season. Each season, I take stock of my closet, the gaps that need to be filled, and create a list of items I need to ensure I have foundational basics. This list keeps me focused and helps me avoid impulse purchases. The pandemic made this task a little easier, as we honestly haven’t gone to many events, and therefore, no need for event wear. For the few holiday events we did have this Winter, I found myself pulling pieces of my capsule wardrobe and adding statement accessories for a touch of festive flare.
I am so much happier with my closet since zoning in on creating my wardrobe based off of foundational basics (and the strong mindset of quality over quantity). I no longer find myself thinking “I have nothing to wear” – there is always a way to mix and match in order to style an outfit that is perfect for any event.
After seeing others share capsule wardrobes over the years, I decided I would put my own together. Merritt Beck from the Style Scribe does a fantastic job of compiling capsule wardrobes and sharing a PDF of outfit ideas – I felt very inspired by her PDF format, which led me to create one with 150 outfit options based off of the 31 items in my winter capsule wardrobe. A few things to note…
-This is simply to provide inspiration to assist you with putting together your winter wardrobe. Feel free to swap out items that may be more flattering for your body type – I know not everyone loves a black chunky boot or faux leather leggings. Some other options could be a chic black Chelsea boot or faux leather trousers instead.
-Depending on your height, pairing a dress with booties might cut off your leg at an unflattering line and a better option is styling with the knee high boots.
-The chunky black boots might be better paired with a looser fitting knit dress or make sure to balance out the bulkiness on the bottom with added layer on top so that the dress is not too tight against the bulky boot. I included a few looser options – I was waiting for my fitted dress to come in for styling with the boots when I shared this post so I wasn’t entirely sure on the fit 🙂
-You will see the jewelry and beanie listed in the capsule, but not included in any of the outfit inspiration. I chose to do that because I wear my jewelry everyday and it felt redundant to pair with each outfit. For the beanie, it can be paired with any of the outfits if it is cold enough to wear.
The PDF is available below for download and for those interested in shopping, I have linked the items (plus some replacement styles to provide a mix + if something sells out) below as well! I own many of these items (or have ordered and awaiting their arrival) so I’m happy to assist with any sizing questions you might have. You can always email me (kellymccoyd@gmail.com) or send a DM on instagram. These links are commission based links so I do get a small commission if you choose to shop from them.

For the few items I am not able to link via liketoknowit – I have included links below:
The black long coat: I recommended sizing up 1 in the classic style
The white button up: I sized up one for a relaxed fit
Another pair of black trousers: These fit TTS
The black purse: I don’t own a bag from Polene, but I always hear great things about quality and think they’re a great option for a nice bag under $500. The handbags from The Curated are another great option for under $500 (if you can snag one when in stock). If you’re looking for something under $100, I’ve been very happy with my Charles and Keith official bag (the ivory one linked above).
My most worn jewelry is my disc necklace from Phyllis and Rosie and hoop earrings from Kara Strope Designs. I have worn my necklace almost every day for over a year (working out, showering, etc) and have no issues with tarnishing. The same goes for my earrings. I also love that both brands are small, woman owned brands and I love being able to support them.
As I mentioned earlier in the post, please always feel free to reach out via email or DM on Instagram with any questions! I hope you enjoy this post and looking forward to creating more capsule wardrobes for seasons to come!
